COMMENTAIRE
presents a conference on
America's Role in the World.
Palais du Luxembourg
Paris, France
June 20-24, 1986
|
Introduction
The general intention of the conference is to reflect on the competing ways of conceiving America's role in the world: as example of self-government, as policeman of international law and order, as crusader for democracy or human rights, as economic developer or as great power like any other. This question lies at the heart of many of the current debates about foreign policy, but the question itself is almost never thematically addressed. An investigation free of ideological passion into this fundamental question will make an important contribution to our understanding of both the basic issue and the contemporary controversies by helping to clarify the proper weight, appeal, and limits of each of these alternatives.
