Democracy Outside America

Introduction
Autumn Quarter

Introduction

In our experience debates in the United States about democracy as a form of government and as a human ideal often blur the distinction between how it has been conceived and practiced within our borders, and how it has been conceived and practiced (or not practiced) abroad. In the coming year we are hoping to begin exploring the differences between democracy in and outside America by inviting a series of speakers who will address this theme by focusing on how the democratic idea - which in the United States is thought to involve liberty, equality, popular government, toleration, social mobility, and individualism, at the very least - is currently being conceived and debated in other parts of the world. We are particularly interested in learning how both defenders and critics of democracy see the issue before them, and what we might have to learn from them. To that end we have invited speakers who can address this question generally, or in a specific region.
